Rate Control and Rhythm Control

When it comes to management of afib there are two schools of thought – Rate control and rhythm control.

Rate control –
Makes no attempt to restore sinus (normal) rhythm – however simply focuses on preventing your pulse/heart rate from getting too fast with the use of medications.

Rhythm control –
With this strategy we make a concerted effort to restore and maintain sinus (normal) rhythm and it can be accomplished in one of three ways….

1. Electrical Cardioversion
2. Chemical Cardioversion
3. Catheter Ablation

We will take a deeper dive into each of these in the coming days.

There is no “one size fits all” approach to treating afib – it is important to understand your options and wit the help of your doctor decide what is the best option for you!

If you or a loved one has symptoms of atrial fibrillation, make an appointment for a health checkup. You may be referred to a doctor like me trained in cardiac arrhythmias, called an Electrophysiologist.

You are not alone!!
