When/if You Are Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation…

When/if you are diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in addition to risk factor modification your doctor may want to start you on anticoagulation to prevent stroke.

We use a score/model to evaluate your risk of bleeding vs your risk of stroke to help guide a shared decision about starting anticoagulation.

Anticoagulation comes in many forms – Direct Oral Anticoagulants and Warfarin/Coumadin are the main drug classes utilized.

If you cannot tolerate anticoagulation for various reasons your doctor may recommend left atrial appendage occlusion (which will be discussed in a spectate post).

If you or a loved one has symptoms of atrial fibrillation, make an appointment for a health checkup. You may be referred to a doctor like me trained in cardiac arrhythmias, called an Electrophysiologist.

You are not alone!!
